HealthShare Montana
HealthShare Montana is a non-profit, statewide initiative focused on the exchange of health care information.
History
In 2006, under the facilitation of U.S. Senator Max Baucus, HealthShare Montana (HSM) was organized by health information exchange stakeholders. This grassroots coalition was initially created by Senator Baucus as a result of his desire to improve healthcare for Montanans. In July 2007, HealthShare Montana created a formal governance structure. HSM adopted a technical plan for heath information exchange and approved privacy and security principles in 2008.
Composed of a diverse group of healthcare leaders, HSM began discussing ways to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of health information technology (HIT) and health information exchange (HIE) across the state of Montana, in an effort to improve the safety and quality of healthcare and eventually lower the cost of its delivery. HSM proposes to plan, develop and implement a statewide health information exchange (HIE) infrastructure. HIE capabilities will be developed according to requirements that will allow its eventual inclusion as a National Health Information Exchange (NHIE) site representing the State of Montana in the National Health Information Network (NHIN).
HealthShare Montana is a nonprofit organization with a 21 member Board of Trustees. It includes representatives from state government, major payers, consumer groups, large and small healthcare facilities and individual physicians. In addition, it includes 55 participating organizations/stakeholders. HealthShare Montana has received a resolution of support from the Montana Medical Association.
