Fundamentals of Behavioral Health Overview

The Fundamentals of Behavioral Health is a 9-week online course that provides essential knowledge for those entering behavioral health or related fields. Participants learn to identify common behavioral health challenges, respond with empathy and professionalism, and work effectively as part of a care team. Content is grounded in Montana’s unique rural and frontier healthcare context, preparing students for roles where access to services may be limited and multidisciplinary teamwork is critical.

What You’ll Learn

  • Core Behavioral Health Knowledge: Understand basic anatomy, human development, and common behavioral health conditions including depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

  • Trauma-Informed Practices: Learn strategies for maintaining safety, supporting self-care, and responding to crisis situations.

  • Communication & Collaboration: Build skills to work within multidisciplinary care teams and effectively engage clients and families.

  • Cultural Competency: Respect and respond to the needs of diverse populations, including rural and tribal communities.

  • Legal & Ethical Foundations: Apply ethical guidelines and documentation practices in behavioral health settings.

 


Career Outcomes

Graduates of this course are prepared for entry-level positions in behavioral health and related fields including:

  • Behavioral Health Technician (with additional training)

  • Peer Support roles

  • Entry-level positions in clinics, schools, recovery centers, or public health agencies

  • Foundational training for roles in the Youth Care or Family Care Programs

This course meets the core competency course requirement for the workforce development programs, Montana Family Support Program and Behavioral Health Workforce Education Training. 


How to Enroll

This course is ideal for Montana residents seeking foundational behavioral health knowledge and are able to commit to nine weeks of online learning, totaling about 60 hours to complete.

Registration is open to all interested participants meeting eligibility requirements.
