Montana's Frontier EMS Leadership Academy offers comprehensive online training to cultivate robust EMS leadership in rural and frontier Montana, enhancing emergency care access, staffing, and satisfaction.

Access EMS Leadership Academy Modules 

Overview

The Montana Frontier EMS Leadership Academy is a comprehensive, online training initiative created to strengthen Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Montana’s vast frontier and rural areas. The academy is part of a five-year HRSA-funded Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program EMS Supplemental Grant, awarded to the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), with support from the Montana Healthcare Foundation.

This initiative is a collaboration between:

  • DPHHS EMS and Trauma Systems (EMSTS) Section
  • DPHHS FLEX Program
  • Montana Office of Rural Health and Area Health Education Center (MORH/AHEC)

Purpose

The primary goal of the EMS Leadership Academy is to support and develop strong EMS leadership in frontier and rural areas of Montana. By providing accessible, targeted training, the program aims to improve staffing, satisfaction, and emergency care access through sustainable leadership practices.

Program Details

MORH/AHEC is leading the development of a robust series of EMS Leadership educational modules. These interactive online modules will be completed over the course of the grant and will focus on:

  • Leadership and mentoring principles
  • Recruitment and retention strategies
  • Storytelling with data
  • Billing practices and recommendations
  • Emergency care access improvement
  • Best practices for EMS leadership

Academy Participants

Six EMS agencies across Montana have been selected to participate in the initial phase of the program.
