About Our Region
Western Montana AHEC is located on the traditional and unceded land of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes which is now the Flathead Indian Reservation. It’s important to recognize the many Tribal Nations that utilized Western Montana as hunting and resting grounds for survival.
The counties of Flathead, Lake, Lincoln, Mineral, Missoula, Sanders, and Ravalli in western Montana offer a wealth of outdoor activities. Flathead County is a haven for nature lovers, with Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake offering hiking, skiing, boating, and fishing. Lake County is perfect for outdoor adventures, with stunning lakes and the Mission Mountains, offering hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching. Lincoln County’s rugged terrain provides endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and exploring remote areas, while Mineral County offers peaceful forests and the Clark Fork River for rafting and hiking.
Missoula County is a lively mix of urban life and outdoor recreation, with easy access to trails, rivers, and parks for hiking, biking, and fishing. Sanders County, with its serene lakes like Lake Pend Oreille and the Cabinet Mountains, offers prime opportunities for fishing, boating, and hiking. Ravalli County, nestled between the Bitterroot Mountains and River, is a paradise for hikers, fly-fishers, and horseback riders, all surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Each county is a perfect escape for anyone seeking adventure and natural beauty.
Western Montana’s counties are well-served by key healthcare centers and tribal health services. Flathead County has Logan Health, while the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes provide healthcare through their Tribal Health Department. Lake County is served by Providence St. Joseph Medical Center and the tribal health programs of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Lincoln County relies on Cabinet Peaks Medical Center, and Mineral County is supported by Mineral Community Hospital. Missoula County offers multiple facilities, including Community Medical Center and Providence St. Patrick Hospital. Sanders County has Sanders County Medical Center, and Ravalli County is served by Bitterroot Health.

Medstart
Multi-day camp that introduces rising sophomores, juniors and seniors to a variety
of healthcare careers. Curriculum includes hands-on activities, presentations from
healthcare professionals, job shadowing, and college prep information sessions. Students
stay on a college campus for the duration of the camp.
REACH
Research and Explore Awesome Career in Healthcare (REACH) is a one-day program hosted
at a local healthcare facility that provides high school students the opportunity
to explore the healthcare field through a variety of hands-on stations and activities.
Pathways to Health Careers in Montana Flyer
Our Pathways Flyer offers students and counselors a comprehensive guide to healthcare
career options at Montana colleges and universities, featuring information on certificate
programs, associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees.
UM Pre-Med
Students studying in the Pre-Medical Sciences at University of Montana participate in an advising program that helps baccalaureate (BS/BA) and post-baccalaureate students become well-informed, well-prepared applicants to
health profession schools and programs.
WWAMI
A program which makes medical education accessible to students in the northwestern
United States by decentralizing the educational process and by sharing existing facilities
and personnel in universities and communities in the WWAMI states. Support of WWAMI
by the State of Montana allows 30 qualified Montana residents to be admitted to the
University of Washington School of Medicine each year.
Rural Clinical Rotation Travel Awards
This program supports health professions studentparticipatingin clinical rotations at rural and underserved sites in Montana. Clinical rotations
must be at a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), a rural health clinic, a tribal health
service, or a Community Health Center (CHC) in Montana.
AHEC Scholars
The Montana AHEC Scholars Program is a nationally recognized initiative that provides
health professions students with interprofessional training, community engagement
experiences, and a strong foundation for successful careers in rural and underserved
communities.
Behavioral Health Workforce Education Training (BHWET)
The program places advanced graduate students in sites across western Montana where
theyaccrue practical hours and gain clinical experiences related to interprofessional practice.
By increasing the number and geographic distribution of highly skilled mental and
behavioral health professionals across Montana, our whole state benefits from increased
access to quality, integrated healthcare.
Friday Medical Conference
Friday Medical Conference (FMC) is a weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunity
for physicians, healthcare professionals, and several healthcare student programs.
This 'Grand Rounds' style lecture series provides a cross-section of recent advances
in medicine along with clinical etiology, diagnosis, and management information.
All Things Vagus Podcast
Nourishing Self Care for the Helping Professional. During our time together, we will
explore a wide variety of topics relating to self-care, all especially geared to the
Helping professional.
Advancing Health Equity Through Mentoring
This program focuses on the impact of mentorship and support for students at the University
of Montana, Missoula College, and Salish Kootenai College. Our goal is to create a
space of mentorship and networking that reaches across socioeconomic groups, cultures,
science and allied health areas of study. This will be achieved by core tenants of health
equity, professional development, and humanization of care. Mentors will include healthcare
or allied health professionals across WMT-AHEC'sidentifiedwestern counties.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
WMT-AHEC has two staff members who have obtained a DEI Program Certificate from Cornell
University. Staff can provide trainings to various audiences at different levels of
understanding, evaluate an organization/department/project, and/or assist with strategic
planning. The support is tiered and would be based on a simple contract associated
with WMT-AHEC.

Host Organization
Western Montana AHEC is hosted by the University of Montana, a public research university in Missoula, Montana. UM is a flagship institution of the Montana University System and its second largest campus. Western Montana AHEC’s offices can be found on the beautiful and serene Missoula College Campus along the Clark Fork River. The Western Montana AHEC was established in 2008 and is located in the College of Health at the University of Montana-Missoula, and is closely affiliated with the 13 health professions programs offered through the University of Montana Health & Medicine (UMHM) programs. |
